Weathering with You Anime in REAL LIFE
We are here in Tokyo to hunt down a ton of locations from Weathering With You!
Tokyo is a massive City so finding these locations might be a bit tricky.
Ya, hello and welcome back to The Anime Expedition. The majority of Weathering With You takes place here in Shinjuku including this exact spot but their anime antics take them to just about every corner of the city so if we’re gonna make it by Sunset we won’t have time for any distractions.
Ooh Family Mart! I know what you’re thinking but breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
I actually hate that saying breakfast isn’t even the third most important meal of the day.
The first place we’re heading is the abandoned building where Hodaka has a standoff with the cops.
Well this is unexpected. This WAS the abandoned building… makes sense that they’d eventually tear it down.
tear sth down= demolish
Well Cheri we’re off to a great start. We are now backtracking Into the heart of Shinjuku which during the day is known for having the busiest train station in the entire world.
But at night when all the lights come on it becomes one of my favorite places in Japan.
You may even recognize the place I’m currently walking through which is historically known as piss alley. I don’t know why they call it that. And I’m sure you recognize this Crossing which is used in just about every anime ever. And just a few steps off the main road you’ll find where the police grab and question criminal-san. Will you let me know if a car comes from behind me.
here, the word “photorealistic” is used as an adjective.
Makoto Shinkai practically invented photorealistic anime so hunting down the locations from Weathering With You has always been a dream of mine. I guess at least since the movie came out.
Some of the locations here are actually on the inside so we’re gonna have to order something.
For the expedition of course, not because we’re hungry, I’m gonna hate every second of it.
This is apparently a four floor McDonald’s. it just keeps going up. They’re actually sleeping.
They’re like all passed out. Hodaka is actually sleeping which is just such a coincidence.
This coffee is actually terrible. So McDonald’s was a little bit of a bust but we did learn something new about Japan. Apparently everyone goes to McDonald’s just to nap.
So this is Hodaka’s home. It’s a little bit exposed but conveniently close to McDonald’s and you know what they say about real estate location location location.
This truck is so unfortunately parked. It is directly in front of the shot that I’m trying to get. So I thought this is where the vending machines were but it doesn’t look right.
I’m lost.
There’s also this huge construction site so I’m wondering if that’s the location and it just looks totally different when it’s covered. So now we need to head all the way to the other side of Tokyo to convert Cheri into a Sunshine Girl.
We need to get up there somehow. I’m like 50% sure that the shrine is on top of this building but that means there’s also a 50 chance that we walk into some sweet Obasan’s apartment. Only one way to find out. What are you looking at? What are you looking at? Keep your eyes to yourself. What are you looking at?
You ready to become a Sunshine Girl?
So this certainly does not exactly match what’s in the movie, but I do think that it’s the inspiration.
I scared the birds away. Yeah you scare a lot of things away…
Type in statue of liberty. Going to New York, the Big Apple.
We’re now crossing the iconic Rainbow Bridge that Hodaka goes under on his way into the city.
The sun girl has truly blessed us today. We could not have asked for a more beautiful day.
I couldn’ t ask/wish for…
used for saying that something is so good , you cannot imagine anything better …是再好不过了
I couldn’ t wish for a better husband.
我丈夫已经再好不过了。
We got fantastic support – we couldn’ t have asked for more.
我们得到了极大的支持,这已经是再好不过的事了。
You know the meme that’s like “Mom I want to see the Statue of Liberty.” “We have the Statue of Liberty at home.” Oh yeah. This is the Statue of Liberty at home, besides size doesn’t matter right Cheri? Well…
On our right apparently it’s the flame statue. It looks more like a yellow stick.
It’s called Flame of freedom statue. It’s a yellow stick. They should call it the magical toothpick of Odaiba.
Do you remember the scene in Weathering With You where the giant Gundam attacks Tokyo?
It does? No no. you know what I think they tore down the ferris wheel because it was like right over there so this shot’s not really gonna line up without that but…
Three… two… one! It’d be great if we had like another friend. Yeah.. Wait stay there. I’ll be both. As always it is incredibly bright- as always if you’d like to download the map that I’m following this video it’s available to my Patreoneets. So we just discovered that here in Koto City there is a miniature version of Tokyo 3 from Neon Genesis so we’re gonna drop everything we’re doing and go see that. Hina can wait.
Change of plans, we are absolutely exhausted so instead we come to this bath house and then we’re just gonna go back to the hotel for a nap but we’ll pick up right where we left off tomorrow.
We took the train all the way out to Tabata station which is pretty far out of the way.
But I definitely think it’s gonna be worthwhile given how important this location is to the film.
This is where Hina first floats away, wait Cheri? You don’t think… I’m right here. Oh thank God!
This is also where the very last scene takes place when they eventually find each other, just imagine that all of this is completely flooded.
Next stop is Tokyo Tower. Well that was one way to get to Tokyo Tower. It took literally all day.
There’s just so many distractions in the city mainly just food but we’ll just consider this Kinda Neet Shippuden. I’m basically the Hokage at this point. There’s just so much to look at here.
It’s too much. A weird Louis Vuitton art installation, Tokyo Tower, this giant temple behind me, there’s and there’s a pumpkin. A pumpkin! So this is the park where they meet suga’s kids for the first time and Hodaka is revealed to be a complete degenerate.
There is a real storm brewing so I’m a little nervous that the Sky Deck is going to be closed because of the weather. Fingers crossed that our sun girl can make something happen.
It’s so stormy right now but we want to go all the way up there.
This was definitely worth coming up here.
