Hello everyone. Today I’m going to show you what is likely the most realistic, terrain generator I’ve ever seen for Minecraft. And not only is it realistic, the terrain it generates contains a great deal of variety as well. It’s very, impressive stuff, and I think you will be agreeing by the end of this video. So, anyway, let’s go ahead and check it out. This mod is called terrain diffusion. And it’s not exclusively a Minecraft, mod. Terrain diffusion is a procedural generator that creates very detailed, terrain, both large and small scale, from continents all the way down to, mountain ridges. There’s a full research paper describing the inner workings of, this project. And as you might imagine, it’s quite complicated. For our purposes, today, we’ll mainly be focusing on the Minecraft integration of terrain, diffusion. So after installing when you create a world you’ll need to select, terrain diffusion as your world type then customize. From here terrain.
diffusion can be configured to generate your world at multiple scales ranging, from 1 to six with one being the smallest. We’ll start with one. At this, value the vertical scale of your world is somewhat comparable to vanilla with, mountain peaks reaching around 300 blocks high. But that’s pretty much, where the similarities end. The terrain is significantly more detailed and, realistic. As I mentioned before, terrain diffusion not only does an, amazing job at generating vast sprawling continents, but it also provides detail, on a small scale. This is especially noticeable if I say disable Voxy, which, I’m otherwise going to have enabled throughout the entire video. When you, walk around the world space, you don’t feel like an ant exploring an infinitely, vast expanse. There’s still detail within small sections of your world as, well. Hopefully, that makes sense. But that’s not to say these worlds aren’t, pretty huge. Even at the current scale of one, biomes can stretch thousands of.
blocks. Crossing this mountain range on foot will be an absolute journey. So,let’s move on to world scale 2. This is the scale recommended on the terrain, diffusion GitHub page for a mixture of world scale and playability. At this, setting, mountain ranges are already stretching a fair bit higher than those, found in vanilla. And the views are just amazing here, which by the way, the, views tend to become even more unbelievable as the world scale grows,as you’ll soon see. Also, as you may notice, even as the scale of the world, is expanded both horizontally and vertically, small scale details remain, impressive. And this trend generally remains the same as we increase the, world size. Speaking of, let’s move on to world scale 4. We’ll skip past three, to truly show the massive difference here. This is where the world starts to, become really big. Mountain peaks will begin reaching a thousand blocks tall, and traveling will be something you truly have to plan around. There are.
very few terrain generation mods that match this sheer scale. Like at this, level, I’d say it’s a requirement to pre-generate your chunks and use a mod, like Foxy. I’d still recommend it at the smaller scales, but here you really just, need to do it. Anyway, this train is already massive, but let’s go ahead and, move on to the largest size of six. This is the maximum world scale available within terrain diffusion. The, only other terrain generator I can think of on this scale is JJ Thunder to the, Max, which is probably still a little bigger, but Terrain Diffusion manages to, maintain incredible levels of detail at this scale. This is probably the first, mod I’ve seen that provides terrain that looks handcrafted. Reterra Forged and, Terraforged were kind of close, but I do think train diffusion is in its own, category, and traveling at this world size will be a massive undertaking. Even, with a horse, journeys to entirely new areas will likely take hours. But.
genuinely, just take a look at how much detail is crammed into this world. The, mountains, cliffs, hills, and plains all blend and flow so beautifully together. It’s unbelievable. And as I mentioned before, terrain diffusion has extremely, varied terrain as well with very impressive continuity. In vanilla, Minecraft, biomes usually dictate the shape of terrain. So cherry groves, generate at high elevations, plains are flat, and so on. Terrain diffusion, generates a continuous geological map that biomes are placed on top of, regardless of the biomes. Every geological feature flows into the next, realistically. It feels like a truly comprehensive and believable world. There’s a really great feature within this mod that makes it significantly, easier for you to find interesting terrain. When you’re in game, simply run, the command TD Explore. This will provide you with a link allowing you to, view your world’s terrain. The left panel displays your world at the scale.
of continents. Lighter colors are higher elevations and vice versa. When you, click anywhere on this map, the right panel will show the detailed terrain, within that selection. You can move this around using the arrows and if you see, terrain you like, just click it and the coordinates will be provided. A very, useful feature, especially considering just how massive this terrain is at, larger scales. Terrain diffusion isn’t perfect. Right now, there seems to be a, distinct lack of rivers or really any body of water outside of oceans, at, least as far as I’ve seen. For me, the sun seems to be locked directly overhead, regardless of the world time. Some shaders are affected more than others. Here with BSL, for example, if I change the time, the position sunlight comes, from is adjusted, but not the sun itself. The Eclipse shader, on the other, hand, seems to have the position of the lighting and the sun locked down. The, clouds still shift though. Even completely vanilla lighting seems to.
have this issue. Now, for whatever reason, Soulless shader specifically, isn’t affected by this problem. I don’t know why, but it’s immune. Perhaps, there’s some other shaders that also aren’t broken in this way, but as far as, I tested, this was the only one that was safe. Also, if you turn shaders off, entirely, the sky is completely dark in many biomes, as if you were underground. So, you know, there’s definitely a few problems right now. But, I mean, this, mod is quite new and isn’t even available on websites like Modern or, Curse Forge yet, so these things happen. So, obviously, terrain diffusion is, incredibly impressive. You’d be hardressed to find more realistic, terrain than this for Minecraft. I mean, it’s literally trained on real world, data. This is very new, so don’t expect everything to work perfectly, but if, you’d like to try it for yourself, installing Terrain Diffusion does have a, few more steps than your typical Minecraft mod. Those steps can be found.
on the project’s GitHub page. It’s not too difficult. The instructions are laid, out pretty clearly. Should only take like 10 minutes. Also, as of now, you, need to have an Nvidia GPU to get this running. You technically can configure, it to run off your CPU, however, it’ll be much slower. Now, as I mentioned, before, you absolutely should pregenerate your chunks. Whether that’s, using Voxy alongside Chunky or using Distant Horizons, I’d recommend giving, your world a good amount of time to get gameplay ready. I personally allotted, each world I showcased in this video at least a few hours to generate, especially the world set to a scale of six. Just to give you a reference, if, you’d like to go back and get an idea for what the distances will look like, I, generated world scales 1, 2, and four with a radius of 5,000 blocks. And then, world scale 6 was about 7,500. Overall, this is just an exceedingly impressive, mod. And outside of Minecraft terrain generator in general, I’ve been.
showcasing Minecraft mods for quite some time now. And it’s truly incredible to, see mods emerging like this one, particularly because we can actually, make use of it now. If this mod existed a few years ago in the pre-distant, horizons with shaders era, the scale of this mod just couldn’t be conveyed, properly. If you’d like to try terrain diffusion for yourself, links are in the, description. and I’m curious how it runs for you all. I’m playing with a 5090, which will definitely give me a skewed perspective on performance. So, let me, know what your performance looks like along with the graphics card you’re, throwing at it. Anyway, I hope you all enjoyed this video and if you did, be, sure to leave a like and subscribe. And until next time, thanks for watching.
