The Titanic Sub and the Enduring Appeal of Extreme Tourism

Diving to the bottom of the ocean is risky. So is flying to space. But people will keep paying to do both.
By Marina Koren

The submersible craft’s journey to the bottom of the ocean and back was supposed to take about eight hours. Two and a half hours for the descent, a few hours to explore the century-old wreckage of Titanic, and then another two and a half hours to return to the surface.

Lionel Messi scores, gets hugged by a fan during Argentina’s 2-0 win over Australia

The fan bolted across the field and high-fived Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez on the other end before doubling back across the grass and tripping. The invader was eventually carried off the field.

Liang and Lin crawled into the temple’s most forbidding areas to determine1 the building’s age; one dusty aerie was inhabited by thousands of bats, many of them dead, and millions of bedbugs. Liang wrote of the experience in “Liang and Lin: Partners in Exploring China’s Architectural Past,” an English-language story of their lives by Wilma Fairbank, a close friend and correspondent.

Liang and Lin crawled into the temple’s most forbidding, forgotten areas to determine its age, including one aerie inhabited by thousands of bats and millions of bedbugs, covered in dust and littered with dead bats. “In complete darkness and amid the vile odor, hardly breathing, with thick masks covering our noses and mouths, we measured, drew, and photographed with flashlights for several hours,” Liang wrote.

“When at last we came out from under the eaves to take a breath of fresh air, we found hundreds of bedbugs in our knapsack. We ourselves had been badly bitten. Yet the importance and unexpectedness of our find made those the happiest hours of my years hunting for ancient architecture.”

IAEA Finds Japan’s Plans to Release Treated Water into the Sea at Fukushima Consistent with International Safety Standards

consistent: in agreement with sth; not contradicting sth 与…一致的;相符的;符合的;不矛盾的
The results are entirely consistent with our earlier research.
这些结果与我们早些时候的研究完全吻合。
injuries consistent with a fall from an upper storey (= similar to those such a fall would have caused)
和从楼上摔下来的情形相符合的伤处

Furthermore, the IAEA notes the controlled, gradual discharges of the treated water to the sea, as2 currently
planned and assessed by TEPCO, would have a negligible radiological impact on people and the environment.

Finally, I would like to emphasise that the release of the treated water stored at Fukushima Daiichi Power
Station is a national decision by the Government of Japan and that this report is neither a recommendation nor
an endorsement of that policy. However, I hope that all who have an interest in this decision will welcome the
IAEA’s independent and transparent review, and I give an assurance, as I said right at the start of this process,
that the IAEA will be there before, during and after the discharge3 of ALPS treated water.
