I want to talk about a case that happened just a few days ago, and it is, all over Chinese social media. It is absolutely chilling, and it’s on the, murder of a Chinese student called Wenwen. Wenwen had just graduated, she, had a job lined up, and she was about to start a new chapter of her life. Her, future was looking very bright, and it was all taken away from her by her, professor, someone who she, her family, and her friends all trusted. And the, same person her family called for help first when they realized she had gone, missing in Korea. Imagine being the parents and later finding out that the, one person you called for help was the person who killed your daughter. Because, this case only happened a few days ago, details are still being released, and, unfortunately, the updates keep getting worse. Quick disclaimer first, I am not, a reporter, I’m talking about this case to you as if we’re friends. I’ll tell, you what the news outlets are reporting on, what Chinese netizens are saying,
and why this is causing such a big stir [music] on Chinese social media. Okay, let’s get into it. On the 20th of August, a Chinese student given the, pseudonym of Wenwen is declared missing in Korea. Wenwen entered Korean borders, on the 14th of August with a return flight booked 23rd. Unfortunately,Wenwen would lose contact with her family in the middle of her trip. After, a few days with no contact from Wenwen, Wenwen’s sister creates an urgent, missing person’s thread on Chinese social media app Red Note. This is when, I first came across the case, and at this point in time, Wenwen is only, regarded as temporarily missing. So, many netizens held onto hope that there, was some sort of reason why she hadn’t contacted family. Perhaps she lost her, phone, or she just couldn’t message, but it’s evident how worried Wenwen’s, [music] family was at this point. This was Wenwen’s sister’s post. “Please, spread the word. My younger sister is missing while studying abroad in South.
Korea. [music] My sister is 25 years old and went missing on the evening of, August 20th, more than 48 hours after disappearing in South [music] Korea. It’s been 5 days with no news. The last known sighting of her was around 8:00, p.m. on [music] August 20th when she parted ways with a friend. Since then, she hasn’t been able to contact us on WeChat, Douyin, or [music] by phone. We, finally managed to contact the South Korean police on the evening of the 21st, to report her but progress is extremely slow due to the language barrier. They, keep [music] telling us to wait for news. We are desperate and have nowhere, to turn. Our family is frantic with worry. The contents of this post are, worrying. Five days with no contact is a long time and because woman’s family is, in China, they can’t do much about the situation other than wait and hope the, police are searching and can find [music] her soon. Beneath the thread,Chinese netizens expressed much concern over woman’s disappearance. [music].
Other netizens offered to help. Many commented that they could speak Korean, or were based in Korea and offered to call the police and inquire on their, behalf. Everyone was obviously very concerned. At that point, no one knew, what happened to woman just that she was missing. A few hours later, woman’s, sister writes an update in the comments. She says that she hasn’t been hearing, much from the police, but they have provided more information on woman’s, last sighting. The friend that last saw woman [music] said she left with a, suitcase in her hand and boarded public transportation and from then on, she, disappeared. Now, the person who provided this update, the friend [music], who saw woman last is 30-year-old Jin Chang-hsin. He’s also the person who, first notified [music] South Korean police and made the initial missing, person report on the 21st of August. Jin [music] is a Chinese man of Korean, descent belonging to China’s Chaoxianzu, one of China’s ethnic minority groups.

So, Jin’s ancestors were Korean, but they would have migrated to China, centuries ago, which means [music] he is Chinese, but he’s ethnically Korean. Jin, works as a teacher at Daegu [music] Catholic University and that’s how he, met woman, his student. Allegedly, this is not reported information, this is, from the comments on threads, [music] woman’s family reached out to Jin and, asked him to help, which is why he was the first to report woman as [music], missing. He was also the last person to see woman, but again, he maintained that, she left his apartment with a suitcase and told him she was going to look for a, place to stay the night. Her plans for the next few days was to shop around and, then head back to Incheon so she could board her departure flight on the 23rd.After more rounds of questioning, police became suspicious of Jin and broke into, his house. There, they found woman’s body. When news broke out that a Chinese, student’s body was found in Kangnam, people started thinking about Wenwen and.
the missing person’s thread her sister posted. It wasn’t long before the news, was confirmed. The deceased was in fact Wenwen and unfortunately by the time her, sister had posted that thread, Wenwen had already fell victim to Jung. What, makes this worse are the screenshots that are now coming out from Wenwen’s, friends and family who [music] trusted him and others that show that Jung had a, history of harassment. When news of Wenwen’s disappearance first broke out, many students reached out to Jung looking to him as a trusted figure they, could confide in and rely on. One student asked after seeing news of, Wenwen’s disappearance on Red Note, “Ge, do you know how long it takes for South, Korean [music] police to respond?” To which Jung replied, “I’ve called them, already. My head hurts. I’ve already picked up five, six calls today.” The, student then says, “Ah, I’ve been worried sick at home. Luckily, you’re, here to help since you know Korean.” Jung just replies, “My head hurts.” And.
the student says, “I’m also just anxiously waiting at home. There’s, nothing I can do.” Some additional context here, the student refers to Jung, as “Ge” or older brother. >> [music], >> It is a polite title for someone older than you, but it also implies closeness. At this point in time though, Wenwen is already dead. [music] Jung killed her, and yet here he is replying to people as if he wasn’t the one who perpetrated the, act, [music] which is horrifying. And if we go back in time a little bit before, Wenwen’s death was confirmed, so when everyone was still speculating on her, being missing, some of the netizens actually thought [music] that Jung, being the last person to see Wenwen, was the most suspicious figure and believed, that he should be interrogated more. However, we can see screenshots of a, mutual friend who knows both Jung and Wenwen quickly jumping in to Jung’s, [music] defense saying that the friend who last saw her, so Jung, is actually a.
teacher and he’s a really [music] nice guy. And they all get along well, so he, probably doesn’t know what happened to her. Though some students may have, thought of Jung as a nice guy, not all of his students felt this [music] way. After news broke out that Jung was the murderer, one of his past students, revealed a case of harassment and shared screenshots of him abusing his power as, a professor and threatening consequences to female students who have turned his, advances [music] down. In the screenshot shared, Jung is explaining himself after, being called out for being inappropriate. [music], Some context here, it appears that the girl who was harassed didn’t directly, confront him, but her partner instead did it for her on her WeChat account, which is why in these texts to her, Jung addresses both the girl and her, boyfriend. [music] We don’t have much context on what exactly happened, beforehand, but it would appear that Jung asked this female student to the.
bar and he was later called out for it. In his text, Jung explains why he picked, a bar. He says it was simply a place he was familiar [music] with. That, particular bar is one he goes to often, it’s quiet, and another professor also, picked this bar when he’s discussing business with others, seemingly, intending to normalize the bar as a reasonable place [music] to meet. Jung, then brings up the fact that he knows the female student doesn’t drink and he, didn’t mean for her to drink with him. So, it sounds like from these texts, the, female student was uncomfortable with this bar setting and the premise [music], of her drinking with her professor, which I think is very valid. Then, because the partner was previously confronting Jung about this, Jung asked, for the boyfriend’s name and major, which is a huge red flag because as a, teacher, what is he planning to do with this information? [music] He then seems, to change his mind, saying “Forget it.” To which the girl or her partner simply.
replies with “Good.” But, [music] that’s not it because he then says, “Also, I, have every right to make the professor ignore you or even delay your graduation, or even prevent you from graduating. But, there’s no need to argue that it’s, not your fault. I’ll calm down soon. Then, I’ll try to maintain some social, [music] distance from you.” That is a crazy thing to say as a teacher. Like,as if you couldn’t be more blatant about wanting to abuse your power. Threatening, to delay someone’s graduation because you got caught out for being, inappropriate is like doubling down on your actions and not showing any remorse, for what you did.
I got caught out lying.
He got caught out cheating.
She was caught out using her phone during the exam.
You got caught out!
Two hours later, Jung sends another message. [music] He, directs this at the girl’s partner. “There’s something else I wasn’t, planning to mention because I was afraid of hurting your feelings, [music] But, your partner’s behavior went too far. Please pass on a message to your partner, for me. I won’t use any profanity, [music].
but what makes you so confident that I’m interested in your girlfriend? Well, I, don’t know, dude. Maybe asking her to go to a bar with you or your response now, of, “Uh-huh, I didn’t want her anyways.” after you got called out because your, fragile male ego can’t stand rejection. We don’t know what happened after or how, this matter got resolved, but Jung evidently still continued to teach at, the university, which is where he would meet Wonwoo. [music] Even though the, police have not released his motives for murder, there are still some details, which we know which have spurred on theories. First, Jung claimed to be her, boyfriend when he called the police. But on Reddit, one of the missing person’s, thread was posted by Wonwoo’s boyfriend. His identity has not been officially, confirmed, but the boyfriend did provide more details on Wonwoo on his thread. So, netizens do believe his identity, and they say that Jung is being, delusional by claiming he’s her boyfriend when Wonwoo already has a.
boyfriend who is in China. And the boyfriend has shared details like the, fact that they both had jobs [music] lined up together,
to arrange for an event or activity to happen, or arrange for sb to be available to do sth 组织,安排(活动);邀集(人做某事)
Mark had a job lined up when he left college.I’ve got a lot lined up this week (= I’m very busy).
She’s lined up a live band for the party.
and he didn’t, accompany Wonwoo to Korea because he was sorting out the plans for them to move, to their new workplace while Wonwoo went back to get her grad certificate. So,assuming Wonwoo does have a boyfriend, why is Jung claiming to be in a, relationship with her? Netizens believe he was interested in her, but this was a, purely one-sided thing. [music] Then, there are other questions like why did, Wonwoo go to meet Jung in his apartment? [music] This is where it’s pure, speculation. The most popular theory online is that Jung may have held the, graduation certificate and told Wonwoo to come collect it at his place, which, is why she went over alone to his apartment. CCTV footage also shows that, she [music] didn’t look forced when she was walking to the apartment. Again, this is all pure speculation and not confirmed. [music] What we do know is.
that Jung took many measures to try and throw off the police.
If you throw off something that is restricting you or making you unhappy, you get rid of it. [V P n (not pron)] [V n P]
//…a country ready to throw off the shackles of its colonial past…

One day depression descended upon him, and wherever he went after that he could never throw it off.
有一天,他突然开始消沉起来,从那以后,无论他走到哪儿也摆脱不了这种情绪。
He delayed [music], the police report because we know now that the murder occurred on the 20th,but Jung made the missing person’s report on the 21st. And he also offered, false information to the police because he said that he saw Woman leaving his, place when we know now that never happened. In addition, later updates, revealed that Jun actually dressed up in [music] women’s clothing, took Woman’s, suitcase, and left his own house pretending to be her so the surveillance, footage would capture her leaving. He also took Woman’s cell phone with him to, the station so the GPS signal would show she had left, turned off the phone, there, then changed, and returned back to his home in Kungsan. And the recent, updates are even more horrifying because in addition to killing Woman, [music], South Korean police have confirmed that Jun mutilated and dissembled her body.Police have found some discarded parts of her body near waste incinerators in.
the Kungsan area. And latest updates to the case have revealed that Jun, scattered her body parts in multiple locations, [music] some over 250 km, away. South Korean police have now deployed additional officers to try and, retrieve Woman’s body parts and are conducting additional on-site, investigations. This is just disgustingly cruel because now Woman, can’t even be buried properly. And like I said, the updates keep getting worse, because now police have revealed that in addition to Jun claiming that he is, Woman’s boyfriend, he also said that Woman had asked him to marry her. And, this is supposedly what led to a conflict between the two. Jun said he, didn’t mean to but in the spur of the moment after the argument, he killed her, by strangling her. Woman’s sister was outraged by the statement after hearing, it and said it made absolutely zero sense. If her sister wanted to marry, him, why did she book a return ticket? Further, she says the father is.
currently seriously ill. Woman was a very filial child so she would never, abandon him in this condition to be married and living overseas. Regardless, of how nonsensical Jun’s claims are, Woman’s sister says it should not, detract from the main issue here, the murder. South Korean police are, currently still investigating though they have stated that they are aware, that since Woman is dead, she cannot testify against Jun’s statement. So Jun, could be providing a favorable testimony for himself and spinning the case in a, way that makes him look good. Currently, police have updated that they are, retrieving evidence from mobile phones, investigating mutuals of Jung and, [music] Won-moon’s to confirm the true relationship between the two, the, possible sources of conflict, and the credibility of Jung’s confession, and to, further determine the exact motive of the crime. Given the extreme brutality, of the crime, police are reportedly considering a psychological evaluation.
to assess whether Jung shows psychopathic traits. Meanwhile, students, of Jung remain shocked that they knew a murderer and saw him regularly in their, daily lives. According to the university, Jung currently teaches two, courses, including [music] rehabilitation and therapy and, neuroanatomy. He was also scheduled to teach two upcoming courses, including, human anatomy and musculoskeletal disorders and treatment [music] in the, upcoming second semester. Some students outright called Jung a psychopath,[music] sharing screenshots of him talking in course group chats, reminding, students of their coursework all within a few hours of killing Won-moon. His, calm tone of business [music] as usual betrays nothing, as if he hadn’t just, committed a brutal murder. >> [music], >> Won-moon’s case is receiving widespread media attention both in Korea and in, China, and these are all the details that are released so far. And it’s just, a huge [music] tragedy and a pity, as is always the case with victims who had.
their lives taken away from [music] them. Won-moon had a whole future ahead, of her, and now her friends and family must grieve her loss. Chinese social, media is also enraged by this [music] case, in part because of how sickeningly, brutal it is. Jung’s lack of remorse, him lying to everyone who had reached, out to [music] him, his history of harassment being ignored, his malicious, attempts to cover up his tracks by cross-dressing and [music] providing, fake testimonials, and him mutilating and disassembling Won-moon’s body, then, discarding [music] it in remote areas. The other part that I think tugs at, people is how many Chinese citizens, [music] like me, would have first, followed this case from the original missing person’s thread, when everyone, was collectively pitching ideas,
To pitch an idea means to present a plan or suggestion to someone in a persuasive way to gain their approval, funding, or support
offering to help look in the area, and, just holding onto hope that Won-moon was safe. And then, the next thing you know, that hope is shattered by the devastating [music] news that Won-moon’s.
body had been found. Chinese citizens call for Jung to be sent back to China, [music] to face trial with a death penalty can be applied. Comments include, bring him back to China [music] so he can face the firing squad and don’t let, him get a comfortable life sentence in a Korean prison. However, it is highly, unlikely for Jang to be extradited to China to stand trial. Under, international law, South Korea has primary jurisdiction because the murder, occurred on its [music] soil. Woman’s family and the many Chinese citizens, following the case will likely just have to wait to see [music] how the South, Korean legal process unfolds and if Jang is convicted, what sentence he ends up, receiving. I feel really sad for Woman, and friends. It must be heartbreaking, [music] for them and I hope justice is served and Jang gets what he deserves. As this case is still under investigation, I’m sure more details, will come to light in the next [music] few days. I’ll keep you guys updated in.
the comments if there are any crucial breakthroughs on this case. Thank you, for watching and girls, [music] stay safe out there. Let me know what your, thoughts are on this case so far and rest in peace Woman.
