easy cooking tips + recipes!

Honey has told us to harvest as many as possible.[music] PSA, I’ve just discovered the farmers market yesterday.I just assumed farmers markets were all very pricey, but the Civic Center Farmers Market Mission and also Alamanean, have some really affordable, produce,[music] even cheaper than the grocery stores.Okay, I need to show you my haul. So, I got all of this for $10.[music] Organic onions, we have huge celery, organic carrots, like giant [music] bok choy. And then I also got another dinosaur kale,so [singing] they’re so good for just like chopping, up and you can like throw them in while you’re boiling, your noodles or your pasta,>> [music] >> and then I just drain them all out at the same time.Mini lemon from the backyard.>> [music] >> I did a jar of this like tofu feta. It’s just like firm tofu marinated in a bunch of herbs, miso paste, and [music] olive oil.So, I’m going to pour this all over the salad.I pickled a bunch of carrots and daikon last weekend.

All you need is white vinegar, sugar, salt, and hot water. And I actually found these jars on the side of the road.Someone was getting rid of them, so I was like, this is perfect.Looks not bad, right? It’s actually so good. It’s so fresh tasting.Tarik got KFC for takeout, which means [music] I’m getting my vegan equivalent,Mr.Charlie’s.I don’t know, I don’t really like go out of my way to look for vegan junk food, but it is kind of fun and nostalgic to have because, they have the same like old school McDonald’s packaging. And for my side, I have a big bowl of the kale salad that I made. So, if I ever do get takeout,I like to have something very nice and fibrous to go alongside it.

perfect bag + dimsum

Kaya, chin down, eyes here, arms to your side.>> Good morning, guys.We have a fun brunch today, so I wanted to show you my outfit.I got my $6 thrifted Acne Studios top I love to wear, this roomy skirt, and I finally found the perfect formal going out type of purse.I need something that is very versatile, fits with like a bunch of outfits,is not made from any animal products, and I want it to fit my water bottle, phone, but it also has to look like very sleek and small and elegant. It is the Songmont Luna bag.It is convertible. There’s four different ways to wear it,and when they came out with their vegan collection and reached out to me,I was like, “Heck yes.” [music] The vegan leather grain is so high-quality,made up of recycled marine debris, actually cleaning up the ocean and landfills. The hardware and design itself is really high-quality.The brand is so cute. The Chinese name is actually Shānxià Yǒu Sōng,which means at the bottom of the mountain there’s pine trees.

[music] It’s a female-founded, brand by a UX/UI designer who wanted to have bags that [music] were beautiful, but also comfortable and versatile enough for work, and I think she did a really great job.[music] I’m like not even a purse person, but I really, really appreciate the versatility of design.>> [music] >> So good.

how to use EVERYTHING in the fridge

Hello and welcome back to Made Up Meal, where I will be eating the things, that look like they are about, to go bad in my fridge.Zucchini squash, no mold,no slime.Okay? This is very edible, guys.Stop throwing stuff away from the fridge.Next up, we have very questionable looking eggplants. We’re going to shave these and eat them. And last but not least,a [music] tikka masala curry, sauce from Trader Joe’s that is going to expire end of this month. We are going to put, all of these into a stew with chickpeas, that I have bulk cooked and frozen ahead of time. These will be my cooking snack. So good.>> [music and bell] >> Nice.>> Non-pressurized flour.>> I feel like I don’t actually follow, real recipes most of the time and I more so follow a concept. So, the concept is like chana masala but with a lot of other vegetables, too.Perfectly clear under the peel.>> [music] >> Mhm.

farm day + brekky

This is hot this one.>> Good morning.I’m about to eat my delicious oatmeal.I’m helping out Crystal, this herbalist, with her one-day retreat.[music] It’s going to be centered around lavender. We’re going to be harvesting stuff from the farm, making a salve,a hydrosol, and we’re going to go have some fun.Yeah.>> This is Snuggles.I just love the attention. We love the laps.So cute.>> Oh my god, there’s so much cat fur in my oatmeal now.No.Oh no, and it’s all over my hands.Oh, of [music] course.I wonder how many strands of cat hair I eat a day.Chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, pistachios, monk fruit,[music] medjool dates, turmeric, black pepper to activate the turmeric, ginger powder, cinnamon, and a little bit of nutmeg.>> [music] >> Aw, you [music] guys are so beautiful.Woah.>> [music] >> So, in Greek mythology, bees are known as psychopomps. So, they they [music] move between the worlds, meaning that they help us when we’re like in liminal spaces.

[music] [music] [music] >> This is my first time meeting a California lilac. She’s beautiful. So much smaller in comparison to the East Coast lilac.[music] >> [music] [music] >> that you were eating vegetable-wise is grown here.>> You can steal the glasses [music] off his face so you can make a tea with it.You can make oil. We’re going to make lotion [music] bars.>> [music] >> Calendula grows more when you harvest them. So, Prem has told us to harvest as many as possible. And Crystal led like a little meditation greeting for the flowers, follow our intuition when it comes to which flowers want to be picked. And I think that’s so cute, because a lot of times there are like a certain flower that I feel like is, really jumps out at me and it’s saying “Hi,pick me, pick me.” >> [music] >> So you would harvest all the way to that point.[music] >> [music] >> Yeah.>> Nigella. Here’s my lavender haul so [music] far. Please do this.>> Nice.>> Wow.>> The oil is just that tiny little layer at the top.

See all that material made that much oil.>> Wait, what?>> So now you understand essential oil.>> The beeswax takes the longest to melt, these take the second longest,

herbalism / foraging haul

and then this is >> 16 >> All right,I’m home and I’m about to do the show and tell. That’s the stuff for you to smell.>> Oh, scared him.>> The main thing we did today was harvest lavender. And here I have two different types of lavender. That was mad.Get a good hit of that. And I got to harvest my own eucalyptus. These are eucalyptus trees.>> Should we put it in the shower?>> Yes, we can take it upside down in the shower. And then I also got some blue pine. They’re a bit wilted. They smell like a gentle lilac. And then I also got some primrose.>> You like it more than this?>> Yeah.>> Wow.They smell so light to me, it’s almost hard to like identify their smell. But it’s interesting. My dad says like plants that are most like, >> The plants that smell good to you are the things you need.>> Yeah.Ta-da!>> Wow, celery?>> Fennel.I got a few yarrow leaves as well.I also brought back some lemon balm.>> Ooh, I don’t know if I the smell.>> The only grab.>> Woah, they’re so cute.>> Calendula.

Oh, this isn’t lemon balm. This is lemon balm.>> Oh, that smells really good.>> This makes really good tea.>> way better.>> [laughter] >> First one is a gift for you.A lavender infusion tastes so good.>> Oh, it’s a concentrate.>> Yes.And then this is the lavender hydrosol we distilled.Yes.>> I like it.>> Delicious, right?>> Woah.>> I got an herbal bug spray for my mom. This is the one of the things that we made with the calendula.I got a gift for your parents. This is sunscreen, all natural sunscreen. And then I got a soap for Rob.I got a gift for my grandma.I got her a rosemary scalp serum. And I got a gift for myself, which is the lavender calendula cream that you can use on your face.Oh, that’s a lot.>> [music] >> That’s so good.>> [music] >> Thanks.

hormone/period chit chat

[music] >> Okay.Purr machine.Purr machine. You’re pretty solid chunky guy.Let’s make some sourdough toast.Ginger is really, really good for warming the stomach. It is a traditional Chinese medicine staple.I’m going to boil it in my water because this has never happened to me before, though I’ve definitely grown up having very irregular periods. And when I get periods of stress, not sleeping well,it really like compounds.I feel like that happened a lot through my university years.Except the one year I went to Germany, guys.I swear to God, I feel like the food regulations in the EU,even eating a piece of spinach like hits different. It like feels so much more nutritious.I was listening to this podcast yesterday and this economist,he talks a lot about it and like the toxins in our food, our makeup.EU banned like 1,200 different ones.Canada has banned 500.And the US has banned 12.I digress. Two weeks after my last period, I noticed I was like having a bit of bleeding.

And at first it’s like if it’s a bit dark,it’s okay because it’s maybe just like some leftover, discharge from like the old blood coming out.But then it was like a little bit every day.So I’m like, is this weird to talk about? But also I think we should be talking about these things a lot more, and it shouldn’t even be weird to talk about it.I’m noticing that friends that are, you know, early to mid-30s, where they’re trying to family plan or have children, now and a lot of people have to go do IVF,all this stuff. This was not really in my realm of knowledge, but this is like the chapter of life I’m like seeing right now.Our western healthcare system just doesn’t have a holistic view of our bodies, our hormones and our the connection between mental and physical.Whereas like traditional Chinese medicine, it’s like mental, physical health are all seen as a whole.Same in Ayurveda and also quite frankly, America has had this before, but what is it?In the ’20s or ’30s,Rockefeller.

like did this whole thing where, he closed down all these medical, schools that existed, including herbalist schools back then. This is going to be like my career shift, going into plant-based medicine like herbalism,Chinese medicine. My neighbors gave me the vegan cheese that she made for her birthday party and, it’s so good.I’ve been spreading it on my sourdough toast. This is from Tartine. Some zaatar, nutritional yeast, and some basil.Herbs are the OG medicine, so cook with a lot of it if you can, especially fresh ones.Feels so good to rest and be calm for yourself, which is what this whole irregular period, bleeding thing is like reminding me to do is to really prioritize rest, sleeping on time. What is [clears throat] that?I know that I do have like blood deficient, It’s not when they say blood in English,it doesn’t mean the same thing as like the biomedicine term, you know?Don’t take it too literally when I say this, but there’s a blood deficiency and I think there’s kidney stagnation,

so I do need to like remember to just like wake up first thing in the morning, move my body around, move the like energy that’s like stagnating.Arm swings is really good.Doing some jumps is really good for you.

cat in the back

Okay, let’s eat outside cuz he’s really screaming.I feel like he would appreciate it.Odin booked it down the moment I opened the door. Are you ready for the crunch of the spread?I didn’t feel like my heart rate dropping whenever I sit back here.Whenever I feel like my eyes are kind of strained or a little tired, you know, just for anyone who works a computer job,I love to sit outside at a park and train my eyes to look into the distance. That’s just something my mom taught me to do as a kid.And I have noticed that it does, heal my eyes because there’s times when I’m like editing so much, everything looks blurry in the distance and then I like I’m like, “Holy crap,I’m scared.I don’t want to have to wear glasses.”, So then I like sit in the back and I do that. And then it kind of goes back to normal.

tcm lunch

Obviously, sleep and rest is very helpful. When I came back from China,my dad made me like the most insane, nourishing blend of Chinese medicinal herbs for my hot pot broth.I’m going to be drinking the broth and the soup for my lunch.People have had this and like it’s cured their years of insomnia.I always find that if I’m already in sleep debt,it really makes me sleepy and I sleep so deeply. If I’m like already ample enough sleep, I just feel like really energized. So, it’s kind of cool like what these herbs do for your body. They almost guide you into the direction that you need.I’m trying to convince him to package, it and like offer it as a soup base that people can buy because it is so.

FINALLY hosting a retreat! + drying calendula

good.I’m going to dry these, and then I think I’ll try to make tea with them or something.Well, I’ve been talking about wanting to do a retreat for the longest time.Think I made it a goal like last year when I turned 28 and I just turned 29,but I think we’re going to make it happen this fall. When I put a form out there last year, there was literally like 500, of you who filled it out within 24 hours story link share, being so excited to do a retreat of sorts. And one of the places I put on was France and so many of you were really excited, about that one.So, I think this is the year, guys. We are going to do it.I know this is like not a lot of time to announce it.I feel like usually people do this sometimes even a year ahead, but I’m like, I don’t >> [clears throat] >> I, don’t even know what I’ll be, doing in a year from now.So, unfortunately this one is going to be just a little more spontaneous.I had a call last week with a ceramicist in the south of France.

Her name is Marianne and I was actually connected to her, through a viewer who went and worked with her for, I think a couple of months, but she just has the most wonderful energy.I was initially, going to go stay with her for a period of time and help her with her ceramics, but I just never ended up going back to Europe for a few years, but I’ve asked her to give us like a master, class on glazing because she does the most otherworldly, mixes of glaze. And I had a shirt ceramics to you when I was in Montreal. My favorite part, aside from hand building, was just playing with glazes, and, painting everything on and seeing how like the metals would interact, with each other. It’s like very different from like, those crock pot like paint your own ceramics where, you know, it just shows up as it is painted.I can really just picture like maybe eight of us in this little town in France, having communal breakfasts, and dinners together, cooking for each other, going into her workshop,do our own glazing experimentations.

call a bestie

My calendula basket is complete.Hello.Hi.>> Hi.How are you?>> I’m doing good.>> You look so beautiful today.>> Call us Linda Wet Gray. She is so excited and 100% down to join on the France retreat. So, we’ll have her on as our in-house art therapist. Please, look at the Rooted in Ease Art Therapy Workshop series that Ashley created, for us.Doing this workshop has been so helpful for me.It’s really changed the game and allowed me to do the big projects, the big dreams and goals that I want to do,step into, more of a space of alignment, rather than doing things and saying yes out of fear, like overworking myself, burning out.Eight amazing workshops in the whole series, art therapy exercises, and a lot of healing through storytelling, which I think is like probably one of the most powerful things.I love it so much.I’m really proud of it.I’m really proud of her.Go check it out. It’s on friendlybureau.com.I think Donny is home.I am taking him on a secret adventure, to this bike repair person who has.

so many second hand bikes that he’s refurbished.

bike & bye

Hopefully find him a bike that he loves. We’re here.Surprise.>> I don’t know where here is, but >> [laughter] >> Oh,those pink handlebars are cute.>> Which would you recommend?>> I learned so much.>> It’s crazy.>> Yeah, you can see the saddle here. This is titanium here.>> Wow.>> Cuz you know, lighter it doesn’t look like >> Yeah.
